Ethiopia to host its first International Conference on Sustainable Industrial Areas SIAEthiopia to host its first International Conference on Sustainable Industrial Areas (SIA) from 8th -10th April 2019, in Addis Ababa.

The three-day conference to be held at the Intercontinental Hotel is organized by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in partnership with the Ethiopian Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC), Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC), UK Department for International Development (DFID) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

Formerly held in India, China, Indonesia, Turkey, Mexico, Morocco and Egypt, the conference is expected to attract more than 300 participants from Africa, Europe and across the world. With the growing interest to shift towards sustainable industrialization, the 8th SIA conference will focus on three thematic areas: Industrial Transformation, Employment Creation and Environmental Innovation.

While industrial areas are a motor of industrialization and technology development worldwide, they are also often criticized as areas of extended resource consumption and environmental pollution. The concept of “Sustainable Industrial Areas (SIA)” answers to this criticism in promoting sustainable industrial development by balancing environmental, economic and social aspects.

This year’s SIA Conference will showcase worldwide country experiences on transformation, Industrial Park and Cluster Development/Management. Experts will discuss how to best attract investors to Africa and boost employment and talk about country approaches to make industrialization in Africa sustainable.

Ethiopia and other African countries are strongly committed to industrial transformation, innovation, employment creation and environmental protection. As SIAs and economic clusters can offer an appropriate framework to achieve an industrial growth that does not only focus on economic prosperity but also takes environmental and social issues into consideration, the conference will give important impulses for decision makers from governments and industries how to design the future industrial setup in their countries.

SIA Conferences – initiated and coordinated by the SIA Working Group of GIZ - have been carried out since almost 10 years. International SIA Conferences have already taken place in India, China, Indonesia, Turkey, Mexico, Morocco and Egypt. Being a valuable platform to discuss recent trends, best practices and future developments of SIA, they bring representatives from companies, industrial parks, industry associations, industrial development agencies, financial institutions, government institutions and international donor agencies as well as consultants and experts together. In between the yearly event of conferences, the SIA Working Group acts as exchange platform for all GIZ projects working in industrial areas offering practical tools, information, guidance and know-how (such as the SIA Toolbox, SIA Guidelines and the International Framework for Eco-Industrial Park from GIZ, World Bank Group and UNIDO).

GIZ Special Initiative “Training and Job Creation” (encompassing projects in Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Ethiopia) contributes to the latter target achievement: Improvement of the business environment for selected geographical areas and economic sectors (Clusters) and promotion of sustainable investments that lead to more employment. Derived thereof, the special initiative aims reads as follows: Businesses in selected sectors record job-creating growth. The project is broken down into three fields of activity:

1) Expanding capacities of Ethiopian small and medium sized businesses;

2) Improving conditions for sustainable and job-creating production increase in industrial parks; 3) Improving conditions for cooperation between Ethiopian and international companies. Therefore, the target group encompasses not only local and international small and medium sized businesses and investors, but also the job-seeking population and employees in industrial parks.
